Volunteer Pays Back
Matthew Gelbin, a long time volunteer and fan of La Rabida, made a creative and albeit significant gift to La Rabida. Taking advantage of the Pension Protection Act, he gifted his IRA assets to La Rabida, tax free.
“It wasn’t producing important income,” Gelbin explains. “With the change in law, I decided to donate the investment to La Rabida. I genuinely admire the leadership and medical staff of the hospital.”
Matt served on La Rabida’s Board of Trustees from 1995 -2005. He strongly supports the hospital’s mission, believing, “La Rabida serves a community that sorely needs this kind [breadth and depth] of medical support.” His gift has been made in memory of his wife of 30 years, the late Florence Lebow Gelbin who supported Matt’s volunteer service.
In recognition of his volunteer work at La Rabida and other Chicago organizations, Matt was elected in 2002 into the Senior Citizens’ Hall of Fame.
